The default looks like \u201cuser@host: directory $\u201d or in my case that would be \u201crw@kaper:~$\u201d. You can make it look like anything you want to. <\/p>\n<p>The file we are going to edit is balled .bashrc.<\/p>\n<p>Open it using your favorite editor.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>gedit .bashrc<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Look for this line in the document that has opened:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p># set a fancy prompt (non-color, overwrite the one in \/etc\/profile)<br \/>PS1=\u201dxxxxxx\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>note: it will not actually say xxx<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Everything that you will put in place of xxxxx will be displayed in your bash prompt.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you set PS1=\u201dhello,&nbsp; please enter a command\u201d, then \u201cplease enter a command\u201d will appear in your terminal instead of \u201cuser@host:directory$\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>You can use special signs that will output something useful like the date or the time.<\/p>\n<p>These are the ones you can use<\/p>\n<ul>\n<blockquote>\n<li><strong>\\a<\/strong> :     an ASCII bell character (07)<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\d<\/strong> :     the date in \u201cWeekday Month Date\u201d format (e.g., \u201cTue May 26?)<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\D{format}<\/strong> : the format is passed to strftime(3) and the result is inserted into the prompt string; an empty format results in a locale-specific time representation. The braces are required<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\e<\/strong> :     an ASCII escape character (033)<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\h<\/strong> :     the hostname up to the first \u2018.\u2019<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\H<\/strong> :     the hostname<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\j<\/strong> :     the number of jobs currently managed by the shell<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\l<\/strong> :     the basename of the shell\u2019s terminal device name<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\n<\/strong> :     newline<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\r<\/strong> :     carriage return<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\s<\/strong> :     the name of the shell, the basename of $0 (the portion following the final slash)<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\t<\/strong> :     the current time in 24-hour HH:MM:SS format<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\T<\/strong> :     the current time in 12-hour HH:MM:SS format<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\@<\/strong> :     the current time in 12-hour am\/pm format<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\A<\/strong> :     the current time in 24-hour HH:MM format<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\u<\/strong> :     the username of the current user<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\v<\/strong> :     the version of bash (e.g., 2.00)<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\V<\/strong> :     the release of bash, version + patch level (e.g., 2.00.0)<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\w<\/strong> :     the current working directory, with $HOME abbreviated with a tilde<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\W<\/strong> :     the basename of the current working directory, with $HOME abbreviated with a tilde<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\!<\/strong> :     the history number of this command<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\#<\/strong> :     the command number of this command<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\$<\/strong> :     if the effective UID is 0, a #, otherwise a $<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\nnn<\/strong> :   the character corresponding to the octal number nnn<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\\\<\/strong> :     a backslash<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\[<\/strong> :     begin a sequence of non-printing characters, which could be used to embed a terminal control sequence into the prompt<\/li>\n<li><strong>\\]<\/strong> :     end a sequence of non-printing characters<\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notice it\u2019s a back slash instead of the forward slash we linux users are used to.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t be confused by all those options. It\u2019s actually pretty easy.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you want your prompt to read \u201cThe time is \u201c.<\/p>\n<p>You would simply type \u201cThe time\u201d and then you would use one of the specials characters.<\/p>\n<p>I see in the list there are a few time formats available. Since we don\u2019t use am\/pm here, let\u2019s use \u201c\\t\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>So the line would look like this:<\/p>\n<p>PS1=\u201dThe time is \\t \u201c<\/p>\n<p><em>(I put a space after \\t, so there is a space between your prompt and the command you are going to write in the terminal)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A prompt like this<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>PS1=\u201dHour: \\t \\n Date: \\d\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Would look like this<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Hour: 12:12:12<br \/>Date: Fri Sept 05<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The \u201c\\n\u201d as you know from the list will create a new line.<\/p>\n<p>With the help from the list you should be able to create your own interesting prompt now.<\/p>\n<p>Chances are you are going to want to change the colours also.<\/p>\n<p>This is done by adding \u201c\\e[x;ym\u201d before the word you want to have that colour. If you want to stop that colour, use \u201c\\e[m\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The x;y will be replaced by the actual code for the colour.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll need a list of colour codes, don\u2019t you?
