Hidden Linux : agt-get secrets<\/p>\n

apt-get is the package handling utility behind Debian-based Linux systems such as Ubuntu, Mint and Mepis. You may be using it \u2018by proxy\u2019 via GUI-based package managers such as Synaptic, but hardened Linux users tend to prefer the command line – especially as the latter has a couple of neat tricks up its sleeve.<\/p>\n

(Not that if you\u2019re not a super-user you\u2019ll need to prefix the following commands with sudo – well, all but the last one …)<\/p>\n

The basics<\/p>\n

apt-get update<\/code>
\nResynchronise installed packages with their sources. (Always do this before an upgrade.)<\/p>\n

apt-get upgrade<\/code>
\nInstall the newest version of all packages installed on the system.<\/p>\n

apt-get dist-upgrade<\/code>
\nUpgrade to the latest version of your distribution.<\/p>\n

apt-get install xxx yyy zzz<\/code>
\nInstall programs xxx, yyy and zzz along with all their dependencies.<\/p>\n

apt-get remove xxx yyy zzz<\/code>
\nRemove programs xxx, yyy and zzz.<\/p>\n

apt-get purge xxx yyy zzz<\/code>
\nRemove programs xxx, yyy and zzz and delete any configuration files that they used.<\/p>\n

apt-get check<\/code>
\nUpdate the package cache and check for any broken dependencies.<\/p>\n

apt-get clean <\/code>
\nClean out retrieved package files.<\/p>\n

apt-get autoclean <\/code>
\nClean out retrieved package files, but only those that are no longer needed.<\/p>\n

apt-get autoremove <\/code>
\nRemove any packages that were installed to satisfy dependencies but are no longer required.<\/p>\n

Advanced stuff
\nSo much for the basics, what about those neat tricks I mentioned? Well, did you know you can use apt-get to get a package\u2019s source code?<\/p>\n

apt-get source xxx <\/code>
\nRetrieve source files for package xxx.<\/p>\n

Or its build dependencies?<\/p>\n

apt-get build-dep xxx <\/code>
\nGet all the dependencies needed to build package xxx.<\/p>\n

Or that you could get it to fetch and build the package for you?<\/p>\n

apt-get source xxx -b<\/code>
\nFetch the source code then compile it. (The -b switch means \u201dbuild it\u201e.)<\/p>\n

The result with be a .deb package which you can install using the Debian package manager command:<\/p>\n
