A \u2018runlevel\u2019 defines the state of the operating system after power on.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, Linux runlevels look like the following:<\/p>\n<p>0 \u2013 Halt (shutdown)<br \/>\n1 \u2013 Single-User mode<br \/>\n2-5 \u2013 Full multi-user mode with console logins and display manager if it\u2019s installed<br \/>\n6 \u2013 Reboot<\/p>\n<p>On most Linux servers, the default runlevel will be set to runlevel 3. Multi-user mode and console logins only.  Whereas, most Linux desktops, the default runlevel will be set to runlevel 5.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to boot into a specific runlevel every time your computer turns on, all you need to do is edit the \/etc\/inittab. For this example, we will change the runlevel from 3 to 5.<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n# vi \/etc\/inittab<br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\nModify the line that looks like this:<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\nid:3:initdefault:<br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\nAnd change the number 3, to 5.<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\nid:5:initdefault:<br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\nSave the file.  Next time you reboot Linux will boot directly into your desktop window manager.<\/p>\n<p>if you want to see what the current runlevel settings are, on ubuntu, simply run;<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\nroot@host:~$ chkconfig<br \/>\nNetworkManager.dpkg-backup  off<br \/>\nacpi-support                2345<br \/>\nacpid                       off<br \/>\nalsa-mixer-save             off<br
