This is a simple guide to get Smarty setup and running quickly. The online
\ndocumentation includes a very thorough explanation of a Smarty installation.
\nThis guide is meant to be a quick and painless way of getting Smarty working,
\nand nothing more. The guide assumes you are familiar with the UNIX system
\nenvironment. Windows users will need to make adjustments where necessary.<\/p>\n
INSTALL SMARTY LIBRARY FILES<\/p>\n
Copy the Smarty library files to your system. In our example, we place them in
\n\/usr\/local\/lib\/php\/Smarty\/<\/p>\n
wget http:\/\/www.smarty.net\/do_download.php?download_file=Smarty-2.6.26.tar.gz
\ngtar -zxvf Smarty-2.6.26.tar.gz
\ncd Smarty-2.6.26
\nmkdir \/usr\/local\/lib\/php\/Smarty
\ncp -r libs\/* \/usr\/local\/lib\/php\/Smarty<\/p>\n
You should now have the following file structure:<\/p>\n

SETUP SMARTY DIRECTORIES<\/p>\n
You will need four directories setup for Smarty to work. These files are for
\ntemplates, compiled templates, cached templates and config files. You may or
\nmay not use caching or config files, but it is a good idea to set them up
\nanyways. It is also recommended to place them outside of the web server
\ndocument root. The web server PHP user will need write access to the cache and
\ncompile directories as well.<\/p>\n
In our example, the document root is \/web\/www.domain.com\/docs and the
\nweb server username is “nobody”. We will keep our Smarty files under
\n\/web\/www.domain.com\/smarty<\/p>\n
$> cd \/web\/www.domain.com
\n$> mkdir smarty
\n$> mkdir smarty\/templates
\n$> mkdir smarty\/templates_c
\n$> mkdir smarty\/cache
\n$> mkdir smarty\/configs
\n$> chown nobody:nobody smarty\/templates_c
\n$> chown nobody:nobody smarty\/cache
\n$> chmod 775 smarty\/templates_c
\n$> chmod 775 smarty\/cache<\/p>\n
SETUP SMARTY PHP SCRIPTS<\/p>\n
Now we setup our application in the document root:<\/p>\n
$> cd \/web\/www.domain.com\/docs
\n$> mkdir myapp
\n$> cd myapp
\n$> vi index.php<\/p>\n
