I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04.3 to Ubuntu 10.04 and things went well, except a few broken packages.<\/p>\n

Apt-get \/ synaptic was very broken due to the flashplugin-nonfree.
\n
\nsudo apt-get -f
\n[clip]
\ndpkg: error processing flashplugin-nonfree (--remove):
\nPackage is in a very bad inconsistent state \u2013 you should
\nreinstall it before attempting a removal.
\nErrors were encountered while processing:
\nflashplugin-nonfree
\nE: Sub-process \/usr\/bin\/dpkg returned an error code (1)<\/p>\n

sudo dpkg --configure -a
\ndpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of realplayer:
\nrealplayer depends on libstdc++5 (>= 1:3.3.4-1); however:
\nPackage libstdc++5 is not installed.
\ndpkg: error processing realplayer (--configure):
\ndependency problems - leaving unconfigured
\nErrors were encountered while processing:
\nrealplayer<\/code><\/p>\n

Not looking very good \u2026 and forcing things did not help (same results with –remove –force-remove-reinstreq.<\/p>\n


\ndpkg --remove --force-all flashplugin-nonfree
\ndpkg: warning: overriding problem because --force enabled:
\nPackage is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
\nreinstall it before attempting a removal.
\n(Reading database ... 239938 files and directories currently installed.)
\nRemoving flashplugin-nonfree ...
\nupdate-alternatives: error: no alternatives for iceape-flashplugin.

\ndpkg: error processing flashplugin-nonfree (--remove):
\nsubprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 2

\ndpkg: error while cleaning up:

\nErrors were encountered while processing:
\nflashplugin-nonfree<\/code><\/p>\n

To fix the problem I needed to manually remove the package.<\/p>\n

cd \/var\/lib\/dpkg\/info
\nsudo rm flashplugin-nonfree.*<\/code><\/p>\n

Now remove the offending packages:

\nsudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq flashplugin-nonfree
\nsudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq realplayer
\n<\/code>
