Linux and other Unix-like systems<\/h3>\n

You need to have a recent Java Runtime Environment<\/strong> (JRE). We have experienced best results with Sun’s Java \t Runtime Environment which can be obtained via \t your package \t manager<\/a> or \t from http:\/\/www.java.com\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Java version 1.5 and later will work. However, be aware that \t there are applet security vulnerabilities in all versions \t prior to Java 1.5 update 4. Generally, we recommend using \t latest. Also, you will need wget for the below commands to \t work (on Ubuntu, apt-get install wget).<\/p>\n

Open a terminal and type:<\/p>\n


\nwget http:\/\/freenet.googlecode.com\/files\/new_installer_offline_1241.jar -O new_installer_offline.jar
\njava -jar new_installer_offline.jar
\n<\/code>
\nAlternatively, \t downloading the \t installer<\/a> (gpg \t signature<\/a>) and then clicking on the file may work on \t some systems, but if there are problems we recommend the \t above command lines.<\/p>\n

Headless install<\/h3>\n

Or do the following on a headless system:
\nwget http:\/\/downloads.freenetproject.org\/alpha\/installer\/freenet07.tar.gz
\ntar xvzf freenet07.tar.gz
\ncd freenet
\n.\/run.sh start
\n<\/code><\/p>\n

Note that this will not install the system tray icon or desktop\/menu shortcuts, so \tyou should open Freenet manually in a web browser:
\nhttp:\/\/127.0.0.1:8888\/<\/code>
\nNote also that most people use the GUI installer – use that if you can. The scripts \tin the headless installer can be a bit unreliable, so try again if it doesn’t work the \tfirst time. And you must have Sun Java installed and set as default<\/strong> (man update-java-alternatives on debian\/ubuntu) before you install.<\/p>\n

Uninstalling Freenet on Linux<\/p>\n

For those of you who have installed Freenet for a reason or another and want to get rid of it, you might have found that it is not possible using conventionnal means (Synaptic\/apt). This method works with the current version of Freenet (as of september 2009):<\/p>\n

1. Open a terminal and type
\ncd ~\/Freenet\/Uninstaller<\/code>
\n2. Now, type java -jar uninstaller.jar<\/code>
