Not only does this list contain what is supposed to be running, but also what order each service should be started in \u2013 a feature many Linux lovers like to point out that Windows lacks!!!!<\/p>\n<p>    * rc0.d \u2013 System Halted<br \/>\n    * rc1.d \u2013 Single User Mode<br \/>\n    * rc2.d \u2013 Single User Mode with Networking<br \/>\n    * rc3.d \u2013 Multi-User Mode \u2013 boot up in text mode<br \/>\n    * rc4.d \u2013 Not yet Defined<br \/>\n    * rc5.d \u2013 Multi-User Mode \u2013 boot up in X Windows<br \/>\n    * rc6.d \u2013 Shutdown &#038; Reboot<\/p>\n<p>      Commands for each Run level are given as under;<\/p>\n<p>    # init 0     = Shutdown the system<\/p>\n<p>    # init 1     = Switch to single user<\/p>\n<p>    # init 2     = Switch to single user with networking<\/p>\n<p>    # init 3     = Switch to multi-user \u2013 boot in text mode<\/p>\n<p>    # init 4     = Not Defined Yet<\/p>\n<p>    # init 5     = Switch to multi-user \u2013 boot in X windows (Desktop)<\/p>\n<p>    # init 6     = Shutdown and reboot the system<\/p>\n<p>How to Change the Run Level in LINUX\/UNIX<\/p>\n<p>Find inittab file in \/etc directory and change the lines under given;<\/p>\n<p>    id:3:initdefault:<\/p>\n<p>    Replace 3 with your desired number i.e. 5<\/p>\n<p>    Please don\u2019t use 0 or 6, your default run level otherwise you won\u2019t be able to boot the system because it will restart the system or just shutdown the system without taking you to the shell.<\/p>\n<p>Why you wanna change the Default Run Level?<\/p>\n<p>Linux administrator mostly works at command line because its effective, efficient, fast and have lots of other good characteristics but when you actually install the system with default settings you just select the default installation settings and it always boot in X windows (means in run level 5), so you have to change the run level manually to save the precious system resources for other important tasks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From http:\/\/www.linusol.com\/ What is Run Level?
